This painting is an homage to the boxing or dancing hares. Beatrice and Benedick are characters from Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing and are famous for their witty sparring. While they spend most of their time throwing barbs at each other, Beatrice and Benedick (with the help of their friends) discover that their true love for each other. The hares in the painting, Beatrice and Benedick, dance by the light of the moon, which is also often associated with hares and rabbits. According to myths in Asia and Europe, hares are linked with the moon, perhaps because they are often active at twilight when the moon first appears. In pre-Christian Europe, pagans believed hares were sacred animals, and moon-gazing hares were associated with the cycles of the moon of growth and re-birth. They also represented abundance, new beginnings, and good fortune. In the Mayan culture, depictions of the moon goddess always include a rabbit in her hand. In Egyptian mythology, rabbits and hares mirror the cycles of the moon. In the Greek myths, rabbits and their fruitfulness are related to moon goddesses, who controls female fertility. The Chinese moon goddess, Chang’e is often portrayed with a rabbit in poems, paintings, and embroidery because the rabbit held the immortality elixir that transformed her from a mortal woman into the goddess of the moon. Following these traditions, the paintings often include moons with the rabbits and hares in the exhibition
